From Laura Dolson, your Guide to Low Carb Diets
I know it's going to take a long time for the medical and nutritional establishment to admit they've been giving bad advice, even in the face of evidence that seems to be piling up faster and faster. So I'm happy when I see some progress in the text of articles in medical journals, and this week we have one. Could sugar be worse for us than other carbs? I don't know, but at least the researchers are looking! Have a happy sugar-free week! Laura

More Sugar - More Heart Disease Risk
This research in last week's Journal of the American Medical Association begins, "Increased carbohydrate consumption has been associated with a lipid profile associated with cardiovascular heart disease risk." It's about time this was acknowledged up front in a major medical journal! This study looked specifically at added sugars in the diet.

The Dangers of Fructose
It's possible that sugar may be especially harmful (or, at least, "differently harmful"), because most forms of sugar are at least half fructose. Fructose carries it's own risks apart from other carbohydrates.

What are Sugar Alcohols?
Maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol - what are they, anyway? Each of these sugar alcohols affects your body differently - be sure to check out the chart at the bottom of the article, which compares them all.

Flax Seed: The Low-Carb Whole Grain
It may be tiny, but it's mighty: The flax seed carries one of the biggest nutrient payloads on the planet, with very little available carbohydrate (that is, carb that isn't fiber). There's lots of flax info here. Also, check out Easy Ways to Get More Flax Into Your Diet
