About 4 years ago I had just done my first product launch and I was
psyched to have built a list of just over 2,000 people. Looking
how far I've come now, I realize 2,000 people isn't that big of a
list - but I'm also reminded of the power of a list of even 2k or
less (if you treat them right).
See I had a bet with a buddy who had the number 1 position in
Google for a highly competitive launch back then. The bet was that
with the f.ree traffic he got from SEO he could outsell me as an
affiliate - and my only source of traffic was my "tiny list" as he
put it.
So the bet was on, and as you know - I hate to lose. But there was
something he didn't know about my "tiny list"... And that was that
it was a *highly* responsive list of people that when I mailed,
they took action.

Come end of the first launch day, I was literally beating the pants
off of him, selling 3 times as much as him... When it was all said
and done, I certainly wasn't the one coughing up the dough if you
know what I mean.
Moral of the story?
A highly responsive list, no matter how "tiny" the competition may
think it is, will outperform any temporary source of traffic (even
the most targeted) any day of the week.
