Welcome to the first week of your 6-week program to a healthier lifestyle. This week, the focus is all on you. Before you make any drastic changes in your life (which, by the way, don't work very well), it helps to know where you are right now. Part of changing your lifestyle is knowing your current patterns so you know where to start. The articles and quizzes listed below will help figure out if you're really ready to make some changes in your life.

Once you've learned more about the elements of a healthy lifestyle and answered the quiz questions, take a moment to take stock of where you are and be honest. If you're truly not ready to change, don't panic! I've given you some ideas for what you can do to prepare yourself for future change.

Defining a Healthy Lifestyle
What it Takes to Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Your six-week course begins with figuring out what a healthy lifestyle looks like. At it's most basic, it includes healthy eating, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising and not smoking.

These things sound simple, but it's never easy to change habits you've had for most of your life. Start small by learning simple ways to live a healthy lifestyle.

Assessing Your Readiness to Change
  Are you Ready to Change?
Changing how you live is hard work. Not only do you have to have a detailed plan for what you want to accomplish and how you'll do it, you have to be mentally ready to implement that plan. Each day, you'll have to make choices to keep yourself on a healthy track...are you ready for that?

Whether your goal is to lose weight, get stronger or feel better, you'll need to work on different aspects of your life like: how you spend your time, how you schedule your day, and how/what you eat. If the way you live doesn't allow for these changes, how far will you get? My article about lifestyle change will help you see how you live now and the kinds of things you'll need to change to reach your goals.

Quiz: Are You Ready to Make a Lifestyle Change?
We all know we're supposed to live healthy, but we also live in a world that doesn't lend itself to physical activity or healthy eating. In order to live healthy, you've got to work much harder than you would to live unhealthy...which seems rather unfair, doesn't it?

This quiz will give you a rough idea of whether you're really ready to make a lifestyle change.

Quiz: Is Your Mind Ready for Exercise?
Exercise is a physical activity but what really matters is your mind. We all know we should exercise, but knowing what you should do and doing it are two different things.

In order to live healthy and exercise, it has to be important to you in some way...that's why your mental readiness is almost more important than physical readiness when it comes to starting an exercise program. Take the quiz to see where if your mind is ready for exercise.

Quiz: Is Exercise a Priority in Your Life?
Everone knows exercise should be a priority and you may think it's a priority for you...but if you find you never stick with your exercise promises, is it really a priority?

Changing your life begins with an honest assessment of where you are. Take the Priority Quiz to find out where exercise falls on your list of priorities.

What to Do If You're Not Ready
What if You're Not Ready for Change?
If you find you're not ready to change how you live, that doesn't mean you're a failure or that you should give up altogether. Maybe you're not ready to tackle everything at once, but there are some small changes you can make to get you on a healthier road. Every healthy choice you make counts, so read through the following list and pick one (or more) things you can do right now to be healthier:
  • Drink water. Staying hydrated is one simple way to increase your health right now. If you're not a fan of water, try Crystal Light On The Go or tea
  • Use a pedometer. Glancing down at your steps throughout the day can motivate you to move more.
  • Learn about health and fitness. Even if you're not ready for structured exercise or tracking your eating, just learning more about it can help get your mind in the right place. Some of my favorite books are:
    1. The Culprit & the Cure
    2. Healing Moves
    3. Body for Life for Women
    4. Body Intelligence
  • Eat more fruit. Even if you're not ready to give up some of your favorite indulgences, you can add something healthy to your diet by eating a serving of fruit before each meal. My favorite snack is frozen mango (defrosted, of course) with yogurt.
